Coily hair, cut and shaped in Jackson

Shaped for your coils, with the time to do it

Pearl Street Shape Studio is a three-stylist studio in downtown Jackson for men and women with coily hair. We wash, stretch, cut dry and define one step at a time, and we are taking new clients.

The shape, step by step

What a shape takes

A full shape takes about two hours. Hair that needs fewer steps takes less, and we say so when you book.

  1. 01
    10 min

    Step 1: Look

We look at your hair dry and as it is, feel its density and where it coils, and talk about the shape you want.

  2. 02
    20 min

    Step 2: Wash

A gentle wash and a detangle in sections, with conditioner doing the work and not force.

  3. 03
    25 min

    Step 3: Stretch

Blow-dried on low heat, section by section, so your coils lengthen and we can see the real length and outline.

  4. 04
    35 min

    Step 4: Cut dry

Shears for the curls and clippers for the neckline where the shape asks, one section at a time, with the hair as it will sit.

  5. 05
    25 min

    Step 5: Define

Your coils are defined again, so you see the cut as it will wear and not as it looked stretched.

  6. 06
    15 min

    Step 6: Style

A soft brush, a pick or nothing at all, and a look at the shape from the side and from behind before you stand up.

Stylists

Three stylists, and time for each client

Hubert, Shawanda and Destiney each cut dry and give a shape the time it takes. Book the one whose work you like, or ask us who suits your hair.

  • Hubert Rawlings, owner and lead stylist, in a navy polo shirt in the studio

    Hubert Rawlings

    Owner and lead stylist

    • Cosmetology license · MS Lic. # 000000

Hubert opened Pearl Street so that cuts for coily hair could have the hours they need. He is the stylist for tapers, line-ups and a first big chop, and he works Tuesday through Saturday.

  • Shawanda Weeks, stylist, in a mustard-yellow shirt with her arms crossed beside a styling station

    Shawanda Weeks

    Stylist, cuts and definition

    • Cosmetology license · MS Lic. # 000000

Shawanda loves a well-defined coil. She cuts and defines natural hair for women and men who want their own shape to show, and she keeps her chair slow on purpose. She works Wednesday through Saturday.

  • Destiney Reynolds, stylist, in a burgundy smock seated on a rolling stool beside a styling chair

    Destiney Reynolds

    Stylist, twists and flat twists

    • Cosmetology license · MS Lic. # 000000

Destiney is quick and gentle with twists, flat twists and cornrows, and she often does the first wash for new clients. She works Tuesday through Friday.

Questions

Before your first shape

Do you cut hair wet or dry?

Dry, for most shapes. We stretch your hair first so you see the length and the outline as they will sit. A few cuts start wet, and your stylist tells you which.

Do I book a men's cut or a women's cut?

Neither. We book by what your hair needs: a taper, a trim, a full shape or a big chop. Everyone books from the same menu, with the same time.

How long will I be in the chair?

A consultation takes 30 minutes, a dry cut and shape about an hour to ninety minutes, and a full shape about two hours. Each service on the menu lists its time.

I'm growing out relaxed or straightened hair. Can you help?

Yes. A transition cut takes off straightened lengths in steps, so you keep as much length as you can while your natural texture grows in.

Can I bring photos?

Please do, including photos of shapes you don't want. They help you and your stylist agree on words for an outline.

Can I see a price before I book?

Prices follow your hair and the time it takes, so we quote after your consultation. You agree to the price before anything starts.
